Author update: My sophomore novel is underway
Happy Almost Election Day, America! I have been doing my best to stay positive and hopeful for our country. For the past two weeks, besides puzzling, I’ve allowed my mind the space it demands to create, or as writers say- I’ve been professionally daydreaming.
Having started my new novel, a paranormal thriller, I’m utterly in love with the characters and setting. Today I spent the morning watching YouTube to learn Irish slang. Why, you may ask? The current ‘work in progress,’ or WIP as the dope writing community calls it, features an Irishman. From 1854.
“So what’s the story with yer man? He’s a bleedin’ villain.”
Suffice it to say, I have a lot to learn about how my Irish villain speaks, walks, and thinks. As author David Corbett wrote in The Art of Character, “The devil, as they say, is in the details, except in this instance, the devil is your friend. “
My current friendly devil, Google, allows me to browse historical websites, news clippings from Dupage county, modern retirement communities, and historical maps. The three-dimensional views of google maps helped me describe Brazil in my last novel; this time, they will shape a suburb in Illinois.
The professional daydreaming, I mean writing, brings me such joy. I awake grateful every day for the privilege to create. On that note, during these incredibly stressful times, I ask: What are you thankful for? I recommend focusing on that.
